Subject: BBC Radio One Pickled Egg Special!!
Date: 24 February 2006 01:00

hi mark,

Radio One's 'One World' program will be featuring an hour long Pickled Egg Records showcase on February 27th. This will feature an interview with label owner Nigel Turner, together with a selection of tracks from the label. The show will be aired at 1am on Monday 27th of February (or late night on Sunday 26th, if you prefer), and will be available as an archive from the BBC Radio One website. Indeed, you're actively encouraged to listen to the archive, as this will convince the Powers that Be at The Beeb that there's an audience for this kind of nonsense.

Recent Pickled Egg releases...

NALLE 'BY CHANCE UPON WAKING' CD
'By Chance Upon Waking' is the debut album by Nalle. This group was formed in Glasgow in the summer of 2004, and features Hanna Tuulikki (vocals, kantele, flutes), Aby Vulliamy (viola) and Chris Hladowski (bouzouki, clarinet). All three group members also perform with Scatter, and Chris and Aby also play in The One Ensemble of Daniel Padden. Nalle work their way through a stunning amalgam of folk, psyche, improv and drone. The songs centre around narratives, augmented by tonal explorations using vocals, guitar, kantele, flutes, viola, bouzouki and clarinet with melodic wizardry, drawing on folk forms in a wholly idiosyncratic manner. 'By chance Upon Waking' will hit the shops in March, but is available now, resplendent in 6 page gatefold digipack CD, exclusively from Pickled Egg.

FARINA 'ALLOTMENTS' CD
'Allotments', Farina's second album with Pickled Egg, marks the latest stage in a musical journey that has lasted nearly 25 years. Since 1981 Mark Brend and Matt Gale have ploughed a defiantly singular furrow through left-field pop, crafting irregular releases that only sometimes line up with the zeitgeist, and then usually by chance. Here, joined by Cliff Glanfield and Tim Conway - relative newcomers with 10 and five years' service respectively - they once again match elegant songcraft with subtle experimentation and inventive arrangements. 'Allotments' is available now, in a limited edition 6 page digipack sleeve.

GEORGE 'A WEEK OF KINDNESS' CD
'A Week of Kindness' is the second album from Manchester's musical magpies, GEORGE. Their haunting anachronistic sound, heard in 2003's resoundingly successful debut album 'The Magic Lantern', resurfaces from its own very distinctive musical world. George's adventures in bricolage gather strength in their new record, a coherent miscellany of bric-a-brac electronics and clockwork melody. It proffers to the listener the saddest, prettiest songs about early surgical cinema, living in memory or a fearful search for joy, that they will hear for a long time. The old-style "partners in chime" [Sleazenation] wish to sing their hearts out to you!

Forthcoming gigs

ZUKANICAN + DRAGON OR EMPEROR + NOW
Upstairs at Halli (formerly Bar Nova)
Granby Street, Leicester
Sunday 5th March, 8:30pm
£5/£4(concs)

Liverpool 6 piece ZUKANICAN have been likened to an unholy hardcore collision between Can, The Soft Machine and Art Ensemble of Chicago. Theremin battery, skippy keys, s-bending bass, drill pattern drums, siren organ in continuum, other pulses muscling in on the action, a diversion into free-funk with sci-fi white noise cutting across. Their free-flowing improvisations, tasty Krautrock grooves and jazz flourishes, paint a huge aural canvas with thick layers of colours borrowed from such luminaries as John Coltrane, Sun Ra and Bablicon. Zukanican’s 10” mini album, E5number was released on Pickled Egg in 2003, and the group’s debut full-length album, Horse Republic, will be released later this year, also on Pickled Egg.

DRAGON OR EMPEROR are the awesome two-piece lightning-bolt drums & bass assault of Aaron Moore (Volcano the Bear, Songs of Norway) and Stewart Brackley (Black Carrot, Songs of Norway) on bass guitar/vocals. Somewhat akin to a geeky Lightning Bolt in charity shop suits loosening up and playing jazz, with additional manic Pere Ubu-style vocalisations. Aaron Moore beats absolute hell out of his drumkit, whilst the Brackley embarks on daring fretless excursions to the absolute edges of what constitutes a rhythm. An enormous sound that marries their intense mixture of fun and chaos.

NOW are an East London based collective, whose style ranges from improvised sounds to rhythmic, dance-y, driving pop music (with a nod to Can and The Fall), and whose live sets often transform into extended percussive jams, in which the audience frequently participates. Their debut album, Frisbee Hot Pot, will be released on Pickled Egg in the late spring/early summer.
