FADE IN/FADE OUT

LANDING
FADE IN/FADE OUT
(Strange Attractions, 2002)
BY PETERTIBET

“A little bit of sound can fill a lot of a space.” I perfectly agree with this sentence, which opens the information-sheet about this American quartet. Five dada-impressionistic songs passing through the bow of time: 37 minutes. Why dada? Because all the music present in Fade In/Fade Out has been completely improvised during the recordings. Even still, Landing has kept its own particular dimension of density and highlights evidenced by the wall of refracting guitars, especially present in Forest Ocean Sound (track 1) and Against the Rain (track 2). These first two tracks are sublimed with a pleasant use of synths, well melted with the swirling merry-go-round of the guitars, all inspired in creating one fluent, and in the same time monolithic, stream of reverberating impressions, as if the colours of the paint would completely liquefy and flow upon and around the picture. Constellations (track 3) is a superb mixing-down of high delayed keys, one falling upon one another, and a clean guitar giving the structure. Echoing tunes are still part of the game while listening to Whirlwind (track n.4). This song is given as an example of grandeur in the information sheet. Last but not least, the Pulse song (track n.5), is the gorgeous closing-title lullaby. This last track executed by Dick Baldwin, Adrienne Snow, Daron Gardner and Aaron Snow, is an intense flowing of light and unsubstantial flickering of colours, sometimes bound with an additional perturbed guitar coming and going, as if from a distance. After having released its last CD, The King Beneath the Mountain(2001), Landing are back on the scenes with a very good EP, dedicated to a happy few who love listening to the unbreakable flowing of sounds, but even appreciable by a great and less pretentious wave of listeners.
